First of all, choose the size of the engine that will get you from point A to point B.  Larger engines on used mopeds will get you there more quickly, as you know, but will also eat into your fuel economy slightly. One exception to the rule is that larger riders will actually get as good or better mileage on a scooter with a larger engine.  It’s physics, basically.  Models sporting 49cc or 50cc engines deliver you to town at about 40 mph, not bad at all, especially if there’s traffic, and offer you 80-90 mpg in the gas department.  Good used mopeds from Honda, Vespa or Yamaha are found in this class. 

Jumping up to used mopeds with an 80cc engine will boost your top speed to 50-60 mph but will drop your fuel economy to 65-75 mpg, still much better than even the greenest automobiles.   The largest standard engines you’ll find on quality used mopeds are 125cc to 150cc models and these scooters are suitable for the highway where laws allow.  They are not a good idea if you spend a lot of time in traffic because you’ll be burning more fuel and not getting the speed benefit of the larger power plant.  Honda, Rocketa and Vespa make the highest rated used mopeds on the market, so shopping their offerings is a good place to begin. 

Beyond engine size getting a few other considerations right will enhance the benefit you gain from the used mopeds you select.  If you plan to carry a passenger or a bit of cargo opting for a scooter designed for a driver and rider is ideal.  You and your passenger will be more comfortable, or you’ll have a place to strap a bag of groceries if you make a shopping stop on your travels.  In addition, if you regularly carry more items shop for used mopeds with good storage capacity under the seat or in the form of saddlebags which are accessories you can always add later.

Experts tell us that using a moped for part or all of our local transportation will pay for the moped in a relatively short period of time in terms of fuel savings or decreased auto insurance costs.  Of course, when you select one of the quality used mopeds available you’ll make up your purchase cost even more quickly than if you to buy new.
